Within Formal Cities Trailer Debut
Raleigh, NC - September 29, 2015 - Within Formal Cites is a project by intern architects Brian Gaudio and Abe Drechsler to share stories and designs from informal settlements in South America. Today, Within Formal Cities is releasing the trailer to its upcoming short Documentary, which will debut in 2016: https://youtu.be/lfNoj_7oJFs.
The documentary focuses on design's role in addressing the global housing crisis. By 2050, one fourth of the global population will live in informal settlements, which are often called slums or shanty-towns. Many people will lack adequate housing and infrastructure. To learn about the housing crisis, Brian and Abe traveled to 5 cities: Lima, Santiago, São Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, and Bogotá where they visited projects and interviewed over 30 designers, government officials, and residents. Their goal is to inform and inspire the next generation of architects to address this problem. To date, the pair has lectured at universities, given webinars, and exhibited photographs highlighting design and infrastructure projects from South American cities. Within Formal Cities began in 2014 when these recent graduates were awarded the Duda Traveling Fellowship from the School of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Along with an initial grant from NC State and a successful crowdfunding campaign, they have also been supported by their local chapter of the American Institute of Architects (Triangle NC). This partnership will continue as they develop the documentary and eventually host a screening of the finished film. The pair is actively seeking funding to finish the film and debut it in 2016. Abe is an architectural intern at Hatch and Ulland Owen Architects in Austin, TX. Brian is a Fulbright Scholar studying urban planning in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
